Filled with the Early American landmarks and stories you have only read about in school, Philadelphia simply must be experienced by those who love liberty. Fly into Philadelphia International Airport (PHL), check in at one of the adjacent Philadelphia, PA hotels, grab a taxi and start your real history lesson!
Philadelphia is the sixth largest city in the nation (until 1830 it was the largest!) and the most populous in Pennsylvania with in excess of 1.5 million residents. This City Guide is a great resource for selecting from the bounty of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania hotels! Dating back to the 1600’s, you can see why visitors throng to see what’s considered “really old” in the U.S. You can see beautiful old churches, old cobblestone roads, old artwork – all in a modern, bustling 21st century city. The contrasts are stunning!
Tours may be taken of Philly by trolley, carriage, bus, boat or helicopter. Of course, walking tours are your best up-close way of seeing the history which comprises this city. The sites are practically countless, including Independence Hall, the National Constitution Center and the Liberty Bell Center, where you can see the infamous cracked bell for yourself. Kids enjoy Franklin Square where they can listen to live storytelling and ride the Liberty Carousel. Visit Declaration House where the Declaration of Independence was drafted by Thomas Jefferson. Tour Congress Hall, where the first Congress met when Philadelphia was the nation’s capital. Immerse yourself in the history of this incredible City of Brotherly Love.
There is much more to the city than early historical landmarks. The Philadelphia Museum of Art has preserved an amazing collection of artworks, including a special museum dedicated to French sculptor Rodin. The Museum’s steps were made famous in the movie “Rocky” – everybody loves to walk or run these steps! Tour famed author Edgar Allen Poe’s home which is a National Historic Site, or the Civil War and Underground Railroad Museum for 19th century history.
Professional sports fans love to attend Phillies, 76ers, Flyers and Eagles games. The number of nearby colleges and universities is staggering, so you can see a college sports team in action every day of the week! Remember, on the East Coast, cities are quite close to one another, so it is not unusual at all to travel from one to the other for events.
If outdoor activities ring your bell, consider visiting Valley Forge National Historic Park, or perhaps Longwood Gardens with over 1,000 acres of horticultural splendor. Over ten percent of the land in Philadelphia (city and county) is dedicated to its park system named Fairmount Park, and it’s considered to be the largest landscaped municipal park in the country. You can run, walk, bicycle and picnic to your heart’s content.
You could visit the Philadelphia Zoo, America’s first. Maybe you would like to ride a camel, a draft horse or a swan boat; plan to get close-up and personal with all kinds of different animals. A short drive will take you to the Brandywine River Museum where you can explore Andrew Wyeth’s artwork along with lovely wildflower gardens.
As you are using this City Guide to assist you with planning, the blue Attractions tab at the top of this page can be very helpful. It allows you to search for hotels near the attractions you are interested in, and you will be amazed at the plethora of accommodation choices from simple, clean discount hotels to some of the best hotels in the country offering spa services and the finest of everything. The east coast corridor is quite condensed; you may be surprised how close attractions and even other cities seem!
So, your love for history has finally convinced you to visit Philadelphia. Let’s start planning your trip today so you can enjoy an original creation, the delicious Philly Steak sandwich!
